I am sorry if this is a long story but I have alot to tell. I found out I was pregnant on April 6 1994 after having morning sickness one day a week while I was visiting my mother in another state. It took two pregnancy test prior to a horrible plane trip to make me believe. I arrived home from my flight and the first thing from at that time my fiancee was " you look awful" I told him that I was tired to which he replied " Your just lazy" I told him " no I am just pregnant" He was shocked to say the least. From then on my life was never the same. Fast forward to Oct 27 1994. After a basically uneventful pregnancy at least from my point of view even though I had to be put on bedrest at 7 months due to PIH. I woke that morning feeling pretty tired but I was very swollen and miserible. About 10 am that morning, my mil called and asked me if I wanted to go to the hospital that I going to deliver at to walk because she had to take my neice in for an appointment. I said no because I was babysitting ( I was a live in nanny) and that I was just going to take a bath and lay down. After getting the little boy I was watching down for a nap, I took my bath and went downstairs to get my fiancee ready for an interview. I sat down on the couch and felt a pop and a small trickle so I thought that maybe I didn't dry off completely. I moved and realized my water broke. I, of course, didn't tell him because I knew he wouldn't go to the interview. So I layed down and had three contractions right in a row. I waited for him to leave and then called my midwife who said to come in. I tried reaching my mother in law, just my luck she was still gone. So I called a girlfriend who came to get me. Along the way we stopped to tell my fiancee where we were going and to meet us at the doctors. He arrived just as they were sending me next door to the hospital. This was at 12 noon. I still had the little boy I was watching with me, my friend and her three kids plus at that time my sister arrived because she was my labor coach. They set my iv in and began fluids. I stayed like that for the afternoon. I was able to walk around which I did alot of and my best friend who was due in Jan. came to see me. I had a regular party going on all the while I had contractions that I wasn't feeling at all. About 4 my midwife came to see me and I wasn't progressing so she decided to start the pitocin. Funny though, even after that I still didn't feel that much other than being hungry because I hadn't ate since that morning. Of course everyone else had dinner. My fiancee even made a Taco Bell run for eveyone but me. I was mad!!! About 7 pm that night, I tried to call my mom who is an OBGYN nurse to tell her what was going on she was gone so I left a message with my ten year old brother, big mistake because later I found out he never told her. A few hours later, I called my mom to tell her what was going on and during this time my fiancee and sister got into an argument over watching Star Trek next generation and laboring women are supposed to be irrational right? At midnight, my midwife came to check me and I was only dialated to a 3. I was getting very miserible, at this time they decided to insert the internal monitor. Ladies I swear this hurt worse than the actual birth. I cried and promptly got sick even more fun. about that time my midwife insisted I take something to relax so I recieved a shot of nubain. I did sleep for a little while about two o'clock the nurse came in to check on me and my fiancee decided at this time I should have an epidural because the nurse stated that it was going to be at least 8 more hrs till the baby would be born. I still think he did this so he could sleep. So I slept until four or five. When I woke up I found out my mom had been calling every few hrs to check my progress so I called her as she was leaving for work. Somehow during this time I had dialated to an 8. I layed there for a while and they came in to top off my epidural unfortunatly it only took to one side and my heart rate jumped to 200 bpm not good. At 8 am, the nurse told me I was at a 9 and if anyone else was going to be there they needed to get there so we called my mil to bring the camcorder. She arrived at 9 am and from 10 to 11:45 I pushed with no luck. I could still feel everything but she wanted nothing to do with being born. During this whole time my mom was on the phone with my grandmother long distance. Cheyanne's heart rate started to slowly drop and she went into distress. What had happened is as she went into the birth canal the cord had wrapped around her neck. As she was born my midwife quickly cut the cord but she was blue and still. I had never been so scared in my whole life especially since I had dreamed earlier that she was born stillborn. I had my mother in my ear asking why she wasn't crying and in the meantime I had begun to hemmorahge and they had to give me a shot to help me clot. After three min she began to breath on her own. The first cry was the most beautiful sound I had ever heard but her apgars were only 4 and 7. So they rushed her to NICU becuase she had swallowed fluid. Lucky for us, she turned out without any adverse effects from this. Cheyanne Margaret Leigh weighed 6 lbs 4 oz and was 19 inches long. She is now a very intelligent 5 year old with a baby sister due in Feb 2000.
