Samuel's Amazing Birth
By Shana

I found out that I was pregnant on October 15, 1997, after only 2 months of trying. The entire pregnancy went great. I only gained 25 pounds.

On Thursday, June 18, 1997, my husband came in from off-shore. He was washing the car, and I was getting ready for my Doctor's apointment. I went to the bathroom and saw the famous mucus plug. I told my husband and called the Dr. He told me to come in and get checked. So we left. I was pretty excited to think that this could be it. (My due date wasn't until June 23.) I still hadn't had any contractions.

The Doctor's office wasn't but 30 minutes away. In that time I started having contractions. They were not too bad though. It wasn't until I got in the waiting room at Doctor's office that they got to be uncomfortable. The Doctor put me on the monitor for 15 minutes and then sent me to the hospital.

I got to the hospital and they made me pee in a cup, gave me an enema, and put in an IV. I wanted to go through this without any pain medication, but I chickened out. (I am really sorry I did.) They gave me an epidural when I was 4-5 centimeters dialated.

My Doctor at that time went home because the Doctor on call had come in. My Doctor told him, "She is small and it's going to be a big baby. It;'s going to take her a while." So the Doctor on call came in and checked how I was doing and left to go get lunch(15 minutes away).

During this time I went from 4-5 to 10 in 20 minutes. They paged the doctor and told him to get there immediately. When he got there I started pushing. I told him no episiotomy unless I was going to tear. I tore a little so he asked about the episiotomy and I told him to go ahead. I pushed 3 more times, and I saw my little boy's head in the Doctor's glasses. I told him not to move. Another push and my beautiful baby boy was screaming his head off.

His daddy got to hold him first. Samuel was the first baby that my husband had ever held.

He weighed 8 pounds and was 19 3/4 inches long. It only took 3 hours and 30 minutes, start to finish, for me to have him. My labor started at about 4:00 p.m. and ended at 7:31 p.m. The Doctor told me the next morning the the next time I better not wait too long before I go to the hospital.

He will be 3 in a few days and we are trying to have another one.
