The Birth of Kayla, Haley, and Delilah

Note: the birth of Delilah, Haley, and Kayla has been the most beautiful experiance in my life.

I felt my first contractions on the morning of May 13. They seemed quite strong, so I called my midwife, Josie. When she arrived at my house, she checked to see if I was dialated. To her surprise, I was 3 cm along! We waited around, but nothing much happened until that night.

I remember that night as clearly as if it was yesterday. By 11pm I was 7 cm dialated. Josie said I was doing wonderfully. She asked me if I was in pain. I said I wasn't. In fact, I thought the contractions were exciting, but intense.

Around midnight, all my water broke. It was a trilling experiance to feel the warm liquid gush through my body and know that my babies were on their way. I had a great urge to push then, but unfortunately I had slipped back to being only 6 cm dialated. I got on my birthing ball, hopping to relaxe my muscles and dialate some more.

Around 2am I was 7 and a half cm dialated and wanted to push more than anything. Josie got me comfortable on my bed and told me I could push during contractions. So I went at it!

Things were turning intense and chaotic then. Josie and my husband, James, stood near the end of the bed to see the births. They coached me really well.

I pushed as hard as I could, concentrating only on that. When a contraction came, it was, "And PUSH! 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10! And breath!" After many hard pushes Josie took my hand. I felt the crowning of my first child's head! It was smooth and warm. Feeling inspired, I gave three of the biggest pushes ever in the history of childbirth. I felt my child's body being expelled from me and heard James say it was a girl!

I had no time to hold her though, because another was on its way. I bore down and began to push again. It took 12 pushes. Then, I felt the same, unique feeling of a baby pushing through my body. It was amazing! Josie caught the baby and said it was another girl. I was barely aware of her or James or anything else. My mind was on birthing my third child.

But push after push brought nothing. I was exhausted by now. Josie, concerned, felt my stomach. "I think this one is breach" she said. Then, I decided to change positions. I sat on my floor in a sort of freestyle- squat position. I began to push again and knew this was it. My final baby was ready. I pushed harder each time. Finally, I looked down and saw the crowning. I pushed once more and the baby slid out into my own arms! I laid back in relief. It was a girl and she was born around 5am.

James and I decided to name our 1st born, Delilah Rose, our 2nd, Haley Michelle, and our 3rd, Kayla McKinsey. They are all beautiful and healthy and delights to have. We've decided to have another as soon as we can!
