Your Developing Baby – The First Year
The first year of your baby’s life is full of constant changes. Your baby is developing rapidly, in almost every aspect of life. She will go through physical development, mental development, language development, as well as social development. There are many exciting things that you should see that first year as you watch your developing baby.
During the first month of your baby’s life, you will notice that his movements tend to be reflexive. He will not be able to focus his eyes on anything more than about a foot away. he won’t reach for anything. He will like to have contact with your skin, and like to be talked to. He will like to look at faces, patters that are highly contrasted, and will begin to recognize your voice.
During month 2, some of her movements will start to become purposeful. She might be able to hold a rattle, and lift her head a bit. She will gurgle, squeal, and coo. She will begin to smile in response to you. She will start to display her personality.
Month three holds many changes for your developing baby as well. He can now roll from the back to the side. He will play with his hands. He will start to understand cause and effect. He will begin to laugh. His cries will start to become different for different wants. He will make eye contact, and start to make vowel sounds.
During month 4, she might be able to stand up with your help. She can lift her head at a 90 degree angle, and reach out for objects. She will begin to associate things and people with names or labels. She will experiment with moving her mouth to make sounds, and will laugh when you tickle her. She will use her arms to signal that she wants to be picked up.
In month 5, he can probably roll over all the way. He might be able to move herself along the floor by wiggling. He will start to pass objects from one hand to the other. He will babble. He might try to copy your sounds, and will watch your mouth closely. He will turn her head when she hears you talking.
Between months six and nine, she can sit up. She might be able to stand when leaning. She will point at things. She can pick things up with her thumb and finger. She can start to feed herself, and drink from a cup. She will focus on one object at a time, and for longer periods. She will make sounds with two syllables. She should respond to her name, and will enjoy looking at herself in a mirror.
In those last three months of the first year, your developing baby will master crawling. He can stand when he is supported, and climb onto furniture. He might be able to walk with your help. He will use simple words, and understand simple phrases. He will enjoy games like peek-a-boo, and will be very proud when you give him praise.
