Why Marriage Counseling?

No matter how happy a couple is, marriage is not a perfect arrangement. Every marriage goes through times of stress, times of contention, and times where the couple is just simply distant from one another. Any of these can be reasons why a couple might choose to go to marriage counseling. Other things that might cause a couple to seek marriage counseling can include:

- Problems with alcohol or substance abuse

- Difficulty with children

- A situation where one or both spouses have been unfaithful

- Financial problems

- Major life changes, such as being unemployed or moving

- Sexual difficulties or other problems in the bedroom

- Problems with fertility

Marriage counseling can help a couple to improve their communication skills with one another. One of the most important activities that takes place in marriage counseling is honest, open, and sometimes blunt, communication. In the marriage counselor’s office, couples will often reveal feelings and other things that they would never dream of bringing up with their spouse in another situation.

Marriage counseling can also help to uncover other issues or problems. If a couple is having trouble, it is important to try to understand why they are having trouble. Perhaps the wife is depressed. perhaps the husband has problems with anxiety. While marriage counseling does not typically attempt to treat or resolve issues like anxiety or depression, it can uncover these issues and help the couple to seek treatment for them. A marriage counselor can, for example, refer one of the spouses to a psychiatrist or psychologist to help work through those types of problems.

Marriage counseling is not the answer to every problem, however. Many couples, who have already decided in their heart of hearts to divorce, will go through marriage counseling with the intention of failing, so that they can at least say they tried. Other times, the differences between people that are married are just too much for marriage counseling to resolve. Also, if there are other problems such as depression or substance abuse, again, marriage counseling can only identify them, it cannot treat them. Still, marriage counseling can often help a couple who is having trouble who believes that their marriage is worth working on together.
