Why Are The Results Varying When I Use Different Brands of Pregnancy Tests?
In general when you take a pregnancy test you should receive a positive result if you are indeed pregnant and a negative result if you are not. If you have taken several different pregnancy tests and received varying results, some negative and some positive, then you should first check the test out to see at what level the test can detect a pregnancy.
All pregnancy tests work by detecting the pregnancy hormone HCG in a womans urine. Some pregnancy tests claim to detect pregnancy with as little as 20 MIU of HCG in the body, which would be just a few days after conception. While other pregnancy tests dont return a positive result until at least 100 MIU of HCG is detected in the body. What this means is some pregnancy tests are more sensitive than others. So, if you test very early after conception a super sensitive pregnancy test might give you a positive result while another less sensitive test will give you a negative result.
If you check out the boxes the pregnancy tests came in you will be able to determine which tests detect pregnancies at what level of HCG in the urine. If the most sensitive test gave you a positive and the least sensitive test gave you a negative then you are still probably pregnant and the negative result was because the test was not sensitive enough. If your test results were the other way around then you are still probably pregnant and one of the tests was faulty, although this is rarely the case. The easiest thing to do is relax and wait a week, then retest. Within a weeks period of time if you are pregnant the pregnancy hormone will have had enough time to increase to a level at which any pregnancy test would pick up the hormone. If at this time you receive a positive result then you are pregnant and a negative result will mean you are not.
Of course, if you are still confused the easiest thing for you to do is simply make an appointment with your doctor. That way you will know for sure whether you are pregnant or not and it is never too early to begin prenatal care.
