When Should I Move My Toddler To A Big Kid Bed?

Parents worry about everything, which is completely normal. One question parents usually have is when they should move their toddler from the crib to a big kid bed. There is no set time and some toddlers may be ready as early as 18 months, while others may be closer to three years. It is completely up to you when you move your toddler if he is happy and safe in his crib. However, there are some reasons why you would want to move your toddler right away.

For example, if your toddler is climbing out of his crib during the night he could potentially fall and hurt himself. This is not a safe situation, which means it is time to move your toddler to a big kid bed immediately.

Another reason to move your toddler is if he is getting to big for the crib or looks uncomfortable. If you feel this is the case then go ahead and switch to a big kid bed.

It is important to keep in mind that when you move your toddler he will have to transition to the new bed and his new freedom. You will want to buy the toddler side rails that will keep your toddler safe during the night in case he rolls around a lot.

A good way to go about making the transition is to allow your toddler to pick out his new bedding. He will love having this power and will probably think seriously about whether he wants Spiderman or trucks, or something else like soccer, or just a color, for his new bed. Allow your toddler to pick out what he likes since it is his bedroom and when he has the power to pick he will be more likely to want to sleep in the room.

What is most important is that your toddler is ready when you want to move him to a big kid bed. Make sure he is ready for the move, unless it is not a safe environment anymore. You will find that when you move your child to a big kid bed that it is easier to put them to bed at night because you can lie down with them and read stories. This helps them feel more comfortable and less confined. Of course, you don’t have the option of putting them in their crib anymore, but that’s just part of life!
