What Should I Eat During Pregnancy?

There is something about being pregnant that inspires women to eat healthy foods. The desire to care for their unborn child is a huge motivation and women who have never been concerned about their diet begin to focus on eating healthy foods. There are many great foods that can be enjoyed during pregnancy that are healthy and provide the best start for the fetus.

Fruits and Vegetables

Obviously, pregnant women should load up on fruits and vegetables. It is recommended that the expecting mother eat seven servings every day from these food groups. That may include four vegetables and three fruits or vice versa. A serving of fruit may be a banana, small apple, or ¾ a cup of grapes. A serving of vegetables includes 1 cup of raw salad greens, ½ cup of cooked vegetables, and the like. It is best to eat organic fruits and vegetables if at all possible.

Whole Grains

Expecting mothers should fill up on whole grains, too, and leave the simple carbohydrates behind. Whole grain pasta, cereal, bread, crackers and rice are recommended. Whole grains are healthier and lower on the glycemic index, which means they break down slower and don’t cause an insulin rush.

Protein

Expecting mothers also need a significant amount of protein in their diet. This includes beans, tofu, peanut butter, lean meat, fish, or eggs. Women should avoid certain types of fish when they are pregnant, however, including King Mackerel, Tilefish, swordfish, and any other large old fish that could be contaminated with mercury.
