What Is Omega-3 And What Is It Good For?
Omega-3 refers to a specific type of essential fatty acid. Omega-3 fatty acids are good for a number of things. This essential fatty acid is found in the brain, as well as the retina. There is evidence to suggest that Omega-3 may be good for reducing the levels of triglycerides, which will in turn lower a person’s risk of having heart disease. There is some research that suggests that not getting enough Omega-3s can actually trigger conditions such as ADHD and Alzheimer’s disease, as well as depression.
In recent years, there has been evidence that has come about that Omega-3 may be good for women who are pregnant. This research suggests that low levels of Omega-3s can contribute to a number of different problems with a woman’s developing baby. This can include things like poor development of the retina, problems with vision, and sometimes even problems with cognitive development.
Omega-3 is a good supplement for a pregnant woman and for her baby. For the mother that is breastfeeding, there is a benefit as well in that Omega-3s are thought to be passed on to the baby when the mother is nursing.
One of the down sides to many supplements that contain Omega-3 fatty acids is that these supplements will very often have something of an aftertaste that is fishy. For this reason, many women have chosen not to use these supplements. Fortunately, there are now even some Omega-3 fatty acid supplements that have an enteric coating, which not only helps to reduce or eliminate the fishy aftertaste, but also help it to dissolve more easily.
