When you are trying to conceive you are suddenly made aware of why you have cervical mucus or what some call vaginal discharge. Not only do you become aware of why you have it but you realize that you need a certain amount and type for pregnancy to take place. It is a lot of information to ingest especially with terms like fertile cervical mucus being thrown around. Luckily, fertile cervical mucus is simple to differentiate from all other cervical mucus types.

Fertile cervical mucus is the type of mucus that most women experience around the middle of their cycle, or when they are about to and when they do ovulate. Fertile cervical mucus is very thin, watery, and much like the consistency of egg whites. In fact, you may read many articles or books in which they refer to the cervical mucus during this time as egg white cervical mucus or vaginal discharge. Fertile cervical mucus is usually identifiable not only in its consistency but also in the quantity. Around the time of ovulation is the peak of cervical discharge so it is often seen in the panties or can easily be seen by inserting a clean finger into the vagina.

If you have the cervical mucus on your fingers it will feel quite slippery and generally will not stick together or be lumpy. The amount of fertile cervical mucus varies from woman to woman, but generally the watery, slippery, egg white consistency is only seen for a handful of days and within four days of ovulation it becomes sticky and much less in quantity. If you watch the changes in your cervical mucus for just one cycle or two you will likely easily be able to identify the different stages of your cycle by cervical mucus alone.

Fertile cervical mucus is important because it allows for easy passage of the sperm through the cervix, into the uterus, and into the fallopian tubes where they will meet the egg and fertilization will take place. During the rest of the cycle the cervical mucus actually forms a plug, making it very difficult for the sperm to get past the cervix and into the uterus and such and if they do the sticky mucus slows them down damaging them or adding to their slow death along the way.

The term fertile cervical mucus makes it seem as though the mucus itself is fertile, but that is not the case. Instead, the consistency of the mucus aides the fertile time of the cycle so that the sperm and the egg can meet up in what is actually a relatively small window. Fertile cervical mucus therefore has a very important role in every pregnancy.
