What Is Cradle Cap And How Can It Be Treated?
Cradle Cap, also known as seborrhea dermatitis, is a common skin condition that affects infants. Cradle cap typically appears in the first three months after birth, and generally disappears within 8 months. Cradle cap rarely occurs after age one.
Cradle cap appears as a rash on a baby’s scalp. This rash is generally crusty and flaky. The rash may appear in patches, or it may be on the entire scalp. Sometimes, cradle cap can appear on the ears, forehead, and eyebrows or eyelids. Cradle Cap is not contagious. Cradle cap is best diagnosed by your health care provider.
Often, treatment for cradle cap is not necessary. If it does not seem to bother you or your baby, you can often just wait for it to disappear. Sometimes, however, cradle cap can be extremely itch or uncomfortable. If cradle cap is particularly severe, there are several treatment options, including:
- Baby Oil. Rubbing a little baby oil the baby’s scalp can help. After applying the baby oil, wait for a few minutes. This will allow the scales to become soft and loose. You can then brush the scales off with a soft brush or a soft, dry washcloth. Some parents have had success using olive oil instead of baby oil.
- Special shampoos. Dandruff-type shampoos, or a special seborrhea shampoo may help with cradle cap. Be sure to follow the manufacturers directions, and any instructions from your health care provider. Typically, these are not recommended for babies that are younger than six months.
- Frequent regular shampoo. Frequent regular shampooing may reduce the formation of cradle cap.
- Cortisone cream. Cortisone cream is an over-the-counter dermatological treatment that may help with cradle cap that is particularly inflamed. Your health care provider may also wish to provide a prescription for a stronger version of this product.
- Brushing. You might be able to brush your child’s hair, either with a small toothbrush or a regular soft brush to help loosen the cradle cap scales.
