What Can Be Done To Correct My Infants Misshaped Head?

Many babies have misshapen heads because they sleep on their backs. This constant pressure on one area of the babys head results in a flat spot or a misshapen head. Parents do not want their child to have a strange shaped head so they search for different remedies to help the situation. In most cases parents can continue putting their child to sleep on his back and making sure that the child alternates the angle of his head so the pressure is not always on the same spot. Then, during the day it is important to ensure that your infant gets some tummy time. Tummy time can begin when your infant is very young and should consist of approximately five minutes four or five times per day. Your infant may not like tummy time if you simply plop him down on the floor, but if you place him on a special tummy time mat, give him something to look at, or lie on the floor with him then your infant has a much better chance of enjoying tummy time.

What happens during tummy time is that your baby is not putting any pressure on his head. This allows the shape to get back to normal in a sense and counter the pressure from his sleeping position the night before. Some infants, however, have misshapen heads despite parents giving them tummy time. In these situations only a doctor can determine the appropriate treatment method. Never try and correct your babys head shape on your own. Instead, talk to your pediatrician about different methods of treatments for a misshapen head.

Some doctors implement a helmet therapy while others use exercise to reposition the head. In some cases surgery may even be required. The best thing you can do is to try and avoid a misshapen head in your infant by alternating which side of his head he sleeps on and giving him plenty of tummy time. You might not eliminate the problem but you will more than likely reduce it significantly. Your pediatrician can address all of your concerns and give you information on prevention, treatment, and more.
