Ways to Travel and Save Money

If you think vacations are only for people who have extra money to burn, think again. You can still enjoy traveling without breaking the bank. As long as you are flexible with your plans, there is no limit to the amount you can save.

Airline tickets are becoming increasingly out of reach for the budgets of most American families, but there are ways to get more affordable deals. Sign up for weekly email alerts from major airlines announcing last minute e-savers- some provide up to two weeks advance notice. Consider applying for a credit card that offers airline miles for purchases- depending on how much you charge, you can receive at least two complimentary airline tickets each year. If you are willing to travel at inconvenient times (such as early morning hours, or late at night) you can usually receive the best deals. Take advantage of airline loyalty programs- you’ll receive additional airline miles every time you fly.

Traveling by foot or public transportation (subway, bus, shuttle or rail) is the best way to go when in a new place. Not only will you be able to experience more of the local character, but you’ll save a significant amount of money since you don’t have to budget for a rental car. Many modes of public transportation offer a variety of discounts for students, seniors, and other groups.

When it comes to accommodations, start by researching discount travel websites like www.orbitz.com for the best deals on a hotel room. Some sites such as www.priceline.com even let you name your own price at a variety of three and four star lodging venues- as long as you accept the deal they find automatically. Rates of hotel rooms and rental homes drop dramatically during off-peak travel times. You can still enjoy the beach during the fall- the same can be said of the mountains during the winter. If your children are young, plan your vacations when school is in session to avoid the crowds.

Consider spending the night in a hostel- they can be found in almost every major city and most offer accommodations at an extremely low rate- some even have suites, meals, and group activities that you can take advantage of. Even better, look up old friends or family that live in the city you will be visiting. You’ll save money and get to spend time with people you care about. (Just be prepared to reciprocate their hospitality in the future!)

If you’re not careful you can blow the majority of your budget on food and drinks, so keep dining out to a minimum. Seek out local grocery stores and stock up on low priced items to make easy meals- as long as your accommodations have access to a kitchen. If possible, venture a little further out for groceries- prices are usually lower outside of the prime vacation zone. Consider bringing a few basic staples from home such as bread, peanut butter, cereal, coffee and other snacks.
