Ways to Talk to Your Doctor about Forgoing Vaccines for Your Child

Many doctors live by the vaccination schedule provided by the CDC. However, more and more parents are challenging this schedule and either want to delay vaccines for their child or they want to skip vaccines altogether. There are some pediatricians who will not allow you to be their patient if you do not follow the traditional vaccination schedule. If you find this is the case with your pediatrician then you will need to find a new more sympathetic doctor. There are quite a few doctors out there who are supportive of a delayed vaccination schedule or foregoing some vaccines altogether. Then, there are doctors who aren’t. You should talk with your child’s pediatrician early in your pregnancy to determine how they handle this situation. You want to know as early as possible so you can make the right decision for your child and who will provide healthcare.

The easiest way to broach the subject of vaccinations is up front and honestly. Do not ask your doctors opinion, unless you are ready to accept it. Instead, tell your doctor you have decided to delay vaccines or forego vaccines for your child. Ask them if they will support you in this. It is important to be confident and sure when you have this conversation and ask direct questions. You don’t want to have your pediatrician kick you out of his practice for not vaccinating so it’s good to know who your doctor is and that they support your decision up front.

You may consider asking your doctor what he thinks about vaccinations and the schedule for young babies. You will need to listen to your doctor’s opinion and give valid reasons why you disagree, should you disagree. Most doctors follow the vaccination schedule and you should know this going in. You will have to provide your stance and make it very clear you are unwilling to change your mind based on the information your doctor will provide you. More than likely they will try to convince you to vaccinate and may even tell you that you are harming your child and society as a whole by not vaccinating. Be prepared with the facts and your own conviction and stand up to the doctor.

Plenty of children are injured or killed every year from vaccines, that’s why they have a vaccine compensation program for injuries in deaths. This alone should give you enough of a reason to delay vaccinating or skip it altogether. You can always find a pediatrician over the Internet that will support your decisions and practice in your area.
