Ways to Save on Your Utility Bills

If you are tight on money each month you may want to consider how much you are spending on your utilities and how you can cut back. Luckily, saving on utilities is one of the easiest things you can do because it is all about discipline and changing your habits. You don’t actually have to suffer in order to save money on your utility bills. You do need to change your habits, however, and the way you consume energy and water. The following tips will help you out.

Low Watt Bulbs

Buy low wattage bulbs to replace high wattage bulbs. Over a year’s period of time this can really save you some money. If you like more light in your home than the low watt bulbs provide then all you need to do is open the blinds or drapes and let the natural sunshine in!

Turn Lights Off

When you aren’t using the lights, turn them off. This is so simple yet few people actually master it. In a year’s time you can really save a lot of money by doing this. When you leave a room, turn out the light, when you go out of town, turn off the lights. It really is quite simple and just takes practice in order to be able to get used to turning out the lights when you leave a room.

Water Conservation

Conserving water is also a way to save money. Don’t run your washing machine half empty, for example. Instead, always wait until you have a full load to wash. Another tip is to take fast showers, don’t dawdle in the water. Time yourself if it helps so you are in and out. Turning off the water while you are lathering up, shaving your legs, and the like is also recommended to save water. Only run your dishwasher when it is full and always use the energy saver button.

Thermostat

You need a programmable thermostat in your home where you can determine the temperature at various times of the day and weekend. For example, during the day when nobody is home there is no need to have the AC or heat blasting. Instead, set the temperature five degrees lower than what you like. When you get home you change the temperature to a more comfortable level and it won’t take too long to cool off or heat up. If you have a programmable thermostat you can simply program the thermostat to be at 72 when you arrive home or at whatever temperature works for you.

These are just a few tips that will help you save as much money as possible on your utility bills and it won’t take too long to get used to!
