Ways to Save Money Every Day
The economy is in bad shape, and your bank account isn’t far behind. Most likely you know at least one person that has lost their job recently, and your own job security is constantly on your mind. Saving money is becoming more and more important, so consider these tips to keep more cash in your wallet.
Consider your daily habits, including morning coffee runs and lunch outings. Eliminating that morning Starbucks and brewing your own coffee at home can save you upwards of $15 per week. The same can be said for your lunch habits. Pick up the staples at a local grocery store- bread, lunch meat, cheese, chips- and pack your own lunch either the night before or the morning of. Don’t forget leftovers- these make easy, instant lunch meals. Considering that buying your lunch each day can cost approximately $5-10 each day, your savings will pile up if you switch to bagged lunches. Reduce your trips to the office vending machine for that tempting Snickers bar or bag of Fritos. Instead, bring your own snacks from home, including fresh fruits, cut vegetables, crackers and popcorn.
Carry around a small notebook in your briefcase or purse to track the money you spend each day- especially the small purchases you think little about. They really do add up- and keeping track will serve as a wakeup call for your spending. Be smart about your shopping. Stay alert for coupons, discounts and specials advertised in newspapers, magazine or online sites. If possible, avoid purchasing brand products and substitute for products with store and private labels.
At the end of each day, deposit any leftover pocket change into a container. It may only be a couple quarters the first day, but by the end of the month, not to mention the year, you’ll have a significant amount of cash to put into your savings account.
If you plan on renting a movie this weekend, try your local library first. You’ll save the $5 rental fee, not to mention the potential late fees if it sits in your DVD player for an extra three days. The same can be said for books- libraries get the same new releases you see in the bookstores, as long as you’re willing to be patient. Sign up for the book’s waiting list and the library will call or email you when it is available.
All it takes to save money is extra attention and a little patience. Just use a critical eye when observing your own daily habits, and opportunities to save will start piling up. Good luck!
