Ways Kids Can Help the Family Budget
Lots of times kids have this notion that money grows on trees. They somehow get the idea that money is always available to buy whatever it is they need or want. As parent known, this is not always the case! Especially if a parent is laid off or underemployed. When a family is facing an economic crisis such as this it is helpful to put the kids to work for the family so money can be saved in as many places as possible. The following are a few suggestions to put your kids to work so they can help shave spending from the family budget.
Make Their Own Lunch
Kids should make their own lunches to take to school every day. There is no reason the parents should have to pay for school lunches or even prepare their child’s packed lunch if the child is old enough to do it on their own. This will save mom time in the morning and allow the child to learn responsibility. That means if they want to eat, they have to pack a lunch! By packing their lunches kids will be able to save their families hundreds of dollars per year.
Clean the House
Do you have someone who comes in and cleans the house? If so, cut that expense and put your kids to work. All children need to have chores and cleaning the home should be part of them. Everyone lives in the home and everyone should be involved in cleaning the home. Each child may prefer specific duties each week or you could have the kids draw their chores from a hat. It’s up to you, but by having the kids clean your home will be clean and the kids will learn responsibility and how to pick up after themselves.
Power Conservation
Kids can also help with the family budget by conserving power. This includes turning off lights, televisions, computers, and other energy hogging electronics/appliances. Families on a budget need to conserve in every way possible and this is an easy way to cut back the power bill. The same goes with water consumption! Teach your kids to conserve and the monthly bills will be easier to swallow.
Carpooling
Kids can also help with the family budget by carpooling. If 5 kids carpool that means a different parent drives once a week, saving the gas and time the other four days. That can be a huge difference to the family budget especially if the parent can spend that free time working or looking for work.
