Vaccination Myths

Not so long ago most parents vaccinated their children because that was the best thing to do, or at least they thought it was the best thing to do. Then, some information became available that perhaps vaccinations were not as safe as many believed. Many myths began circulating, some good and some bad, so that parents ended up completely confused about whether or not they should vaccinate their kids. The following are a few myths that you should know about vaccines.

Vaccines are Safe

Vaccines are not safe and in fact do cause injuries and fatalities every year. The percentage of these compared to the amount of children being vaccinated may be low, but when it is your child that is injured or killed the percentages don’t amount to much. Vaccines are not 100% safe and it is important to be aware of this and informed.

Vaccines are Effective

Many parents allow their children to be vaccinated based on the belief that vaccines are effective and will help their children ward of deadly diseases. However, outbreaks of polio, smallpox, measles, mumps, and even Hib have occurred in populations with these vaccinations. As a result, just because your child is vaccinated does not mean that he will not catch the disease.

Vaccines are Responsible for Decreased Disease Rates

Many people believe that vaccines are worth the small risk simply because they are responsible for eradicating many diseases. This may not necessarily be the case. In fact, between 1850 and 1940 the percentage of diseases decreased approximately 90%. This is because hygiene increased significantly and this occurred before vaccines were mandatory.

Vaccines are Necessary Because the Diseases are Deadly

Many parents believe that the vaccines are important because the diseases that they could catch are deadly. In most cases, the illnesses that a child is vaccinated for are not deadly as long as they are appropriately treated. Most children benefit from having these illnesses because they then develop lifelong immunity, which vaccines do not offer.

No short term reactions to vaccines means everything will be okay

Just because your child did not react to the vaccine within 72 hours does not mean there will not be repercussions. Known carcinogens are in vaccines and they could wreak havoc with your child’s body. It is important to be aware of this and know what you are allowing to be put in your child.
