Tips for Buying Discounted Meat and Saving Money

If you have ever looked at the price of meat you may have been astonished at the range of prices and how they seem to continuously increase. Ground beef can reach $4 per pound and ribs or steaks are much higher. If you are trying to feed a large family and stay on a budget then you may want to consider buying discounted meat. It’s important to understand that there is nothing wrong with discounted meat, at least not most of the time, and that it’s being discounted so people are more likely to buy it and use it before it does go bad. There are some tips about buying discounted meat and if you follow them you should be able to save money and get good meat.

Ask about Discounting Days

The first thing you should do is ask when meat is discounted. Some stores will have particular days they discount foods while others will discount daily on what needs to be sold. Talk to the meat manager at your favorite grocery store to find out there policy. When you know it is easier to make a plan and find out when to buy meat at the best prices.

Smell the Meat

You will always want to smell discounted meat before you buy it. Just because it has been discounted does not mean it is bad or will go bad soon. However, you will still want to smell it first to make sure. If you don’t then you may end up with rotten meat on your hands and you will still have to come up with something for dinner.

Use or Freeze

Remember, too, that when you buy discounted meat you must cook it that same day or else freeze it. Never leave discounted meat hanging out in the refrigerator for a few days because it will likely spoil. When this happens you will find it much more difficult to return to the store because you bought discounted meat that you never cooked. Using it or freezing it within moments of getting home is really the best option.

Follow these tips and you should find it is not that difficult to find and buy discounted meat that is still good and it will save you a great deal of money over the course of a year.
