Tips For A Successful Car Trip With A Toddler
Toddlers are so active that they don’t take very well to having to sit in a car for long periods of time. They may be able to make it from the house to the park without too much of a fuss, but any more than that and you are likely to hear some noise. If you are planning a long car trip, which with a toddler means anything over an hour, then you will want to consider some of the following suggestions. They will help make the trip easier on the driver, the passengers, and of course your toddler!
Snacks
Toddlers get hungry and they will notice their hunger more readily in the car because they will be bored. You want to keep plenty of snacks for your toddler so no matter what they want you can offer it to them. You don’t want a meltdown because you forgot their favorite snack. So, try and anticipate what that might be or better yet have your toddler help you pack the snacks. That way they know what is available and will more likely eat it when you give it to them. Make sure you take a small cooler with water, juice or milk, and some high protein snacks like cheese that can curb their appetite.
DVDs
There is nothing like a one and a half hour movie when you are on a long car ride! The peace and quiet is very special and it will allow everyone in the car to relax. Your toddler will be so excited that she is able to watch more than 15 minutes of TV that she will probably remain enthralled the entire movie. This is excellent news for the car ride, but it may not be so excellent when you get home and continue to hear movie requests!
Books
If you take quite a few books with you then you can read to your toddler as you are traveling. Point out pictures, colors, new words, and the like, and simply have fun. Your toddler will enjoy the diversion and may be calmer than you imagined.
Toys
Take several of your toddler’s favorite toys when you are traveling. She will love the comfort of her favorite toys and enjoy playing with them. If you take several then you have something to switch out and keep your little one engaged and happy.
Frequent Pit Stops
With a toddler you may need to stop frequently, especially if you are potty training. Try to travel for a few hours and then stop for lunch so your toddler has time to play and get some energy out.
