The Benefit of Learning Infant Sign Language

Have you ever thought how much easier it would be to raise an infant if he could only talk to you? Well, with infant sign language you and your infant can communicate long before he is able to actually speak to you. There are many benefits to learning infant sign language and once you read about them you just might want to try them!

Benefits

First of all, signing allows your baby to communicate with you. That means you dont have to guess if he is crying because he is hungry, wet, sick, or something else. He can sign to you that he wants more milk, that he hurts, or that he needs a diaper change. This communication means less frustration for parents and that baby has his needs met much quicker.

Fewer tantrums occur as well. As infants grow into toddlers they become more interested in communicating their needs and feelings. However, when their attempt at communication goes unnoticed or cant be figured out then the toddler has a tantrum. Many times tantrums are a result of frustration for the toddler. These can be significantly reduced through infant sign language.

As the infant and parent are able to bond earlier through this type of communication the closeness between parent and child increases. This is amazing because all parents love their children, but a real bond is created through sign language.

Children who learn to sign also are more interested in their world, including books. As you read a book and sign different meanings to your infant his interest will increase significantly. This helps your child learn faster and build a better vocabulary for when is able to speak.

Parents are also able to help their child learn words earlier through signing. Many times a toddler will say the first two letters of a word and the parent must guess what he is trying to say. However, if the baby is signing at the same time then the parent knows immediately what the child wants and can help him learn the word while making him happy.

Parents are also able to get to know their infant and his personality a lot faster than if they waited for him to learn to communicate through words. Infant sign language truly is a gift that should be taken advantage of because it increases communication and reduces frustration on the part of the child and the parents.
