Starting a Carpool

Do you live near some of your coworkers? If so, you may want to consider carpooling. This is an excellent way to save money as well as help out the environment. By carpooling you will really have to change your daily commute schedule and maybe even get up earlier than usual. However, by carpooling you will experience many benefits, too. The following tips will help you get your carpool started if you are interested.

The first thing you will want to do is find out if anyone else is interested. You might consider sending out an email to your co-workers to see if there is enough interest within your office. If so, you are all set to begin planning your carpool. If not, you might want to put an ad in the newspaper or on Craigslist to find other individuals in your area that both live and work near you. There are lots of people who want to carpool so you shouldn’t have difficulty filling up your car! Even carpooling with one other person is enough to cut your costs in half, but carpooling with three or four people is even better.

Once you have the car full of carpoolers you must create a schedule. Most people create a route and every person takes a day to drive. Then, they just alternate days driving. There is one concern that individuals in a carpool have and that is the schedule. It is of utmost importance to ensure that everyone gets to work on time. Without a schedule and adhering to it strictly people will arrive late to work and this can cause problems within the carpool. That’s why many carpoolers have a strict rule and that is individuals who consistently run late will be asked to leave the carpool. It’s not fair to others to have to carpool with someone who can’t stay on a schedule and because of this it is important to set rules and follow them.

Once you start a carpool you will find that while your trip to and from work each day may be a few minutes longer, the amount of money you save by only driving once or twice per week is worth it. Not to mention, when you carpool you don’t have to drive every day so on the commute you can read a book, the newspaper, catch up on email, or simply relax!
