Should Fetal Movement Begin In The Second Trimester?

If you are worried about fetal movement then you should be aware that you probably wont feel movement before 16 weeks gestation and many women dont feel movement until 22 weeks gestation or more. Although your baby was moving and squirming about as early as seven weeks gestation he wasnt big enough for you to feel it until the second trimester.

The first fetal movements are known as quickening and first time moms often mistake their babys first movements for gas or other pregnancy twinges. But, moms for the second time or more will recognize those little flutters for what they are, your baby!

Some women who are really thin will feel fetal movement earlier in the second trimester than hose women who are heavier. Just the same as first time moms feel movement later in the second trimester than women who have been pregnant before. However, almost all women feel fetal movement by 24 weeks gestation. If not, then an ultrasound can check out whats going on with the fetus.

Women in their second trimester who have yet to feel the baby move wonder what it feels like and want to have an idea so they can be on the lookout for that. Women have described it as a fish moving around, flutters, butterflies, popcorn popping, and many other sensations. At first you will probably think the movements are hunger pains or maybe even gas, but as you feel them on a more regular basis you will be able to tell the difference. If you are very busy at work or around the house you probably wont even notice those first movements. But if you take a break, lie down, and relax then you can really tune into your body and feel your baby moving.

As the second trimester progresses the little flutters will become stronger and soon you will be able to tell that an arm is poking you or a foot is kicking you. As your baby grows and develops his movement becomes more coordinated and you will feel more. Some days you will feel lots of movement and the next day none. This is completely normal. However, as the second trimester progresses you should feel more regular movement and a change from this should be checked out.
