Quitting Smoking During The Second Trimester

Women who are interested in becoming pregnant should quit smoking before they do so. However, this is not the case for many women. Nevertheless, if a woman is pregnant in her second trimester and wants to quit smoking then she should do so by all means. Of course, quitting wont be easy but it is incredibly important to do so. The reason isnt just for your own health but the health of your unborn child. Are you aware of all the negative effects smoking may have on your baby?

Many women say they know that smoking is not good for their baby, but their friend smoked during pregnancy and had a healthy baby or their mom did or any other person who supposedly smoked and had a healthy baby. However, this is not an excuse to do so and if this did happen that baby was especially lucky to be born without problems.

Most babies whose mothers smoke have an increased risk of being born prematurely. Premature babies may not be fully developed and may not be able to survive outside the womb. In addition, miscarriage is increased among women who smoke while pregnant.

Additionally, babies born to mothers who smoke generally have a low birth weight. This means they are susceptible to a whole host of problems and have an increased chance of dying during childbirth or within the first year of their life.

Basically, when a mother smokes it is like she is lighting a cigarette for her infant as well. The smoke is just a poison that poisons your baby. It enters the placenta and robs your baby of oxygen and food. When you think of how the cigarette actually affects your baby then it makes a lot more sense to go ahead and quit now. Smoking a cigarette is not worth the life of your baby. So, go ahead and give it up. The sooner you do so the better off your baby will be.
