Premarin and Menopause

Many women are prescribed Premarin when they go through menopause. However, there are many risks associated with these drugs that may be considerably worse than weathering the symptoms caused by menopause. For example, the estrogens in Premarin and other similar drug may cause an increased risk in cancer of the uterus. Women who have any vaginal bleeding while taking these products should talk with their doctor immediately as this is a common sign of uterine cancer. If this happens to you make sure your doctor checks out the cause and does not just write it off to a side effect.

Keep in mind that if you are taking Premarin or a similar drug to help you reduce your risk of heart disease then you could actually be increasing your risk. Many women taking estrogens whether accompanied by progestin or not will be more susceptible to dementia, heart disease, strokes, heart attacks, breast cancer, blood clots and more. The symptoms Premarin supposedly treats, including itching, dryness, hot flashes, and the like, are generally not so bad that women need to risk cancer, cardiovascular disease, and dementia. The problem is that many women are unaware of these risks before beginning a drug like Premarin.

There are actually many natural ways that you can treat your menopausal symptoms without having to take strong drugs with potentially bad side effects. Things like wild yam, soy, and other supplements may help reduce the severity of menopausal symptoms without causing any additional side effects. Many times a healthy diet, plenty of exercise, and stopping bad habits like smoking can be enough to allow women to manage their menopausal symptoms on their own.

Be very careful taking hormone replacement therapy like Premarin while going through menopause. It may be the best option for a very small percentage of women, but in most cases it is a dangerous way to get relief from symptoms that are not debilitating in the first place. Remember, menopause is a natural part of life and not a disease so there does not need to be any specific treatment.
