Pre-Term Labor During The Second Trimester


Preterm labor during the second trimester is scary to an expectant mom and it should be because it is dangerous. Learn more about preterm labor during the second trimester by reading more.

Preterm labor begins when the uterus starts contracting before it is time. The cervix also begins to dilate earlier than it should. Preterm labor is defined as any time after the 20th week of gestation and before the 37th. Going into preterm labor during the second trimester means you could have your baby early and he wont be ready for the outside world. While many babies born in the second trimester survive, some dont.

A problem with the mother, fetus, or both may be the cause of preterm labor. Amazingly, preterm labor occurs all the time and the reason why is never determined. Common cause of preterm labor are being prenatal with multiples, placental abruption, preeclampsia, incompetent cervix, drug use, alcohols sue, and maternal infection.

The biggest concern with preterm labor is that the baby will be born prematurely. When babies are born in the second trimester they have an increased risk of all kinds of problems because their organs are not completely mature yet and ready to function in the outside world. A baby born in the second trimester will have a low birth weight and may not be able to control their own body temperature not to mention breathe or eat on their own. Babies born before 28 weeks gestation are at an increased risk of problems because they are so small and immature. Technology can help them survive, but sometimes problems are inevitable.

If you are worried you are at risk for preterm labor during the second trimester your doctor will be able to discuss all your questions with you. As long as you go to regular prenatal checkups your condition will be monitored and if there is a cause for concern your doctor will let you know.
