My Toddler Is Hyperactive - What Can We Do?

A hyperactive toddler can be extremely frustrating, and can sometimes even be exhausting. More than one parent has thrown her hands in the air, completely unsure of what to do to help. Fortunately, there are some things that you can do when your toddler is hyperactive.

If your toddler is extremely hyperactive, you should discuss this with your health care provider. It is possible that your toddler suffers from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). However, it is rare to see a diagnosis of ADHD in children under the age of 5. Part of the difficulty in diagnosing ADHD at the toddler stage is that most toddlers are generally very active, and it can be hard to distinguish between the normal toddler’s activity level and the activity level of a toddler with ADHD. Still, your health care provider may be able to offer you some helpful advice, or refer you to an expert in Child Psychology, who may be able to correctly diagnose ADHD, and from there suggest appropriate therapy or medication.

One of the best things that you can do for a hyperactive toddler is to find positive outlets for her energy. If she can’t quit moving her hands, get her some blocks that she can build something with. If she likes to run, take her to the park and have her do laps. Using her energy, rather than suppressing it, is often much more effective. After a toddler expends some of this energy, she will often be more ready for some quieter time.

Parents of a hyperactive toddler can also make a conscious effort to keep the amount of time that their hyperactive toddler has to sit still or quietly to a minimum. Obviously there are times and places where it is not appropriate for a toddler to be running around and being loud, but parents can limit those times. They can also make use of those periods of activity, by timing them just before a quiet time. If you know that you will be going to the store, for example, give him some time to run around the yard before you go.
