My Infant Isnt Gaining Weight - What Can I Do?

Babies that gain weight show they are getting enough to eat. However, if your infant is not gaining weight then you should be concerned. In fact, you will need to call your doctor or even your lactation consultant to determine what is going on. Most of the time the lack of weight gain occurs in breastfeeding infants so that is what will be discussed here.

Once you realize your infant is not gaining weight your childs pediatrician will likely ask you a lot of questions. These questions will concern your child, his eating habits, as well as information about you and breastfeeding. By asking a lot of questions the doctor will be able to determine or at least get a better idea of what is going on.

You can tell if your child is just a slow gainer or actually has a problem by evaluating his growth. If he has a specific growth pattern, although a slow one, he is probably just a slow gainer. If his head circumference and his length is average for his age and he dirties as many diapers as faster gaining infants then he is probably getting enough to eat. The problem comes into play when the child is not gaining any weight or is actually losing weight, when he does not gain a pound or more per month the first four months of life, and has not gained back the weight lost at birth within three weeks.

Fortunately, if your baby is not gaining your doctor can help you determine what is going on and offer suggestions. Breastfeeding is still the best option for your infant, but some changes or interventions may be necessary. Dont think that just because your infant is having problems with weight gain that you are doing something wrong or that you are not producing enough breast milk for your baby and will need to switch to formula. Only a doctor or lactation consultant can help you with these problems and advise you on what to do.

You will know if your infant is not gaining weight so dont worry about missing the fact. One, you will be with him on a daily basis and will know everything that goes on with him. In addition, you will take him to the doctor on a regular basis and he will be weighed. If there are growth problems your doctor will know what to do. So, just make a doctors appointment, try to relax, and know that everything will be alright.
