Making Time For Socialization While Homeschooling

One of the biggest drawbacks, or so critics say, to homeschooling is the lack of socialization. However, many parents who homeschool say their children receive plenty of socialization and grow up to be social adults with great socialization skills. There are of course some homeschooled children who dont grow up this way, but if their parents make time for socialization then they will probably be fine. The following tips are some ways homeschooling parents can get their children to socialize despite not attending a traditional school.

Tip #1 Sports
Almost all communities have sports teams from tennis to swimming and basketball to football. No matter what sport your child is interested in he will be able to play and this way he will meet many other children his same age. There are sports offered year round so your child can play a variety of sports, stay active and healthy, and also socialize with people at the same time. This is a perfect way for your homeschooled child to practice his socialization skills.

Tip #2 Church
Many parents who homeschool also attend church, synagogue, or another religious institution. Here children are able to make friends, socialize with kids their own age as well as those younger and older, and even socialize with adults. Youth groups, choir, and other church activities are great at keeping your child involved and socializing while enforcing morals and religious dogma.

Tip #3 Clubs
There are many clubs that are not associated with traditional schools. These include Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, as well as other similar organizations, where your child can interact with others, become civic minded, and simply have a lot of fun.

As you can see there are many ways your child can socialize with others, develop friends, and have a life of his own even though he is homeschooling. Homeschooling does not sentence children to a life without friends or keep them from developing social skills. However, parents who do not include these types of activities in their childs overall education will more than likely raise a child who does have social problems. If you choose to homeschool make sure your child understands there are a certain number of social activities he must take part in and let him choose. That way your child will have control over his activities and will make friends at the same time.
