Making Life-Long Friends While Being Homeschooled

A common critique of homeschooling is that the children are not socialized enough. Many say that homeschooled kids just cant handle social situations and are strange or weird because of it. However, many homeschooled kids are more socialized than public school kids. Many of these children interact with people of all ages in social situations on a daily basis and become more confident and possess leadership skills that other kids dont. The reason why is because they are out and about in the community taking advantage of all types of social engagement.

Because of this making life long friends while being homeschooled is very easy. Just because you are studying at home does not mean that you are not involving yourself in outside activities. This allows homeschooled students to meet a wide array of kids of different ages and truly develop lifelong friends.

Another reason why these kids actually have good socialization skills is because of homeschool organizations. Lots of communities have a homeschool organization where kids of all ages and with many different backgrounds and interests take part in social activities together. These kids play games, go to movies, hang out, have play dates, and do all the same things other kids their age do. However, when kids mix with a wide range of other ages and children that have many different interests then it promotes understanding, sharing, giving, and resolving conflict. All of these lessons are incredibly important and they are lessons homeschooled children learn more frequently than their traditionally schooled counterparts.

As a result, making life long friends while being homeschooled is no more difficult than making lifelong friends in any other situation. It might not always be easy, there will be fights and misunderstandings, but in the end a true friendship will remain that way no matter where the individual was educated.

If you are a parent and are homeschooling your children and you are worried about their socialization skills then take it upon yourself to ensure your child gets what he needs. Sign him up for the Boy Scouts or the local soccer team, go to church, and let him become a part of the youth group, as well as other local activities. There are lots of ways for your child to meet others and develop lifelong friends even if he is homeschooled. Focus on this and it will happen!
