Learn to Sew and Save Money

Many years ago everyone’s mother or grandmother made their clothes. That’s just the way things were done. Buying readymade clothing was considered a luxury, one few people could indulge in. In fact, readymade clothing was reserved for important occasions only like weddings, honeymoons, and things of that nature. Other than that, clothes were made at home. The benefit of this was that clothing was made just the right size and length and there were never clothes that were a bad fit! If you are on a budget then you may want to consider using your sewing skills to help you save money.

Clothes

You could start sewing new clothes for your family. If you don’t feel like that is the best use of your talents then you may want to simply use your sewing skills to mend the clothes your family already has. Clothes for little kids are especially easy to make and will result in one of a kind outfits that will have lots of love and hard work invested in them. You may even consider using your sewing skills to make clothes to sell on auction sites or for friends and family.

Tablecloths/Linens

If making clothes are past your skills and abilities you can at least make tablecloths and other table linens. This is actually quite easy and only requires the fabric and knowing how to hem. Simply hem the entire piece of fabric around the edges, press, and voila, you are done! You can also make seasonal tablecloths like for spring, Fourth of July, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and the like and sell them to help make ends meet.

Pillows

If you have ever seen the price of throw pillows at stores you know making your own is certainly more affordable not to mention more original. It’s amazing, but throw pillows can easily cost from $15 to $50 each. That’s a lot of money just for some pillows so consider making your own. You can make various sizes and use varying complementary fabrics to really create a beautiful look at an affordable price.

These are a few tips to help you save money if you are a good seamstress. If not, you can always take some free classes at a community center to learn. It’s a skill you can use forever and even potentially use to earn you money.
