Is Nausea Medication Safe To Take During Pregnancy?

Some studies suggest that as many as 7 out of 10 women will experience pregnancy-induced nausea. Also known as morning sickness, pregnancy-induced nausea is one of the most common symptoms of pregnancy. Contrary to popular belief, morning sickness can occur at any time of the day, not just during the morning. This nausea may be constant, as it is for some women; or, it may just occur occasionally. The degree to which you feel sick can also vary; you might just feel a little woozy, or you might experience full fledged vomiting. What makes pregnancy-induced nausea particularly frustrating for some women is that they are concerned about the safety of taking nausea medication during pregnancy.

The safety of nausea medications during pregnancy varies from one medication to the next. Some of the medications that are considered safe are cola syrup, also called Emetrol. Generally speaking many medications are considered safe to use on a short-term basis during pregnancy. These include Phenerga, Tigan, and Compozine, for example. Still, it is important that you speak with your health care provider before taking any nausea medication during pregnancy.

There are a variety of other things that a mom-to-be can do to alleviate nausea during pregnancy, without having to resort to nausea medication. These can include:

- Avoid foods that are high in fat, especially saturated fats.

- Avoid foods with strong smells that could trigger nausea.

- Sea bands or motion sickness wrist bands may help some women who have morning sickness.

- Eat small, frequent snacks and meals to avoid feeling either hungry or too full.

- Use rice cakes or crackers to counteract nausea.

- Make sure to keep hydrated.

- Many women have had success using a variety of ginger products, such as ginger root supplements or ginger tea to help combat morning sickness.

- Your nausea may be caused by the iron in your pre-natal vitamin. If you believe this is the case, speak with your health care provider about other options.

If your nausea is so sever that it is interfering with your daily activities, you should speak with your health care provider to help determine what treatments might be the most safe and appropriate for your situation.
