Is it safe to diet during pregnancy?
It is not safe or recommended to diet during pregnancy. Pregnancy is a critical time for both you and for your baby. During pregnancy, you do need to focus on the areas of diet and nutrition, however dieting with the purpose of losing weight or not gaining weight is just not healthy. The focus, during pregnancy, should be on the nutrients that you are consuming, rather than on gaining, losing, or maintaining weight.
Pregnancy is not the time to diet. During pregnancy, a woman should gain around 25 to 35 pounds. If a woman is overweight, she should still gain weight during her pregnancy, although in a smaller range of between 12 and 25 pounds. And, if you are under weight when you become pregnant, you should probably gain as much as 30 to 40 pounds during pregnancy. Dieting during pregnancy is unsafe because it may prevent you from gaining the proper amount of weight.
Still, it is also important not to overindulge during pregnancy. When you are “eating for two,” you don’t need twice as many calories. In fact, during pregnancy, a woman only needs about an extra 300 calories per day beyond what she took in prior to pregnancy.
In terms of your pregnancy diet, you will want to make sure there are things that you are getting enough of. You should take in around three to five servings of fruits and vegetables each day. At least one of these vegetables should be a dark orange vegetable, and two of them should be leafy dark green vegetables. During pregnancy, your diet should include two servings of fish, chicken, extra-lean meats, or cooked peas or dried beans. You should make sure to have at least 8 glasses of water during pregnancy to avoid becoming dehydrated. You should also have around six servings of grains, and three servings of either low fat or nonfat milk products.
The best way to be prepared for postpartum weight loss is to make sure that you are aware of what you are eating while you are pregnant. Just being in the habit of recording your food and counting your calories during pregnancy can help the pounds to come off much faster after your baby is born.
