Is First Grade Stricter Than Kindergarten?

The question of whether or not first grade is any stricter than kindergarten is a somewhat difficult question to answer. The fact of the matter is that there are a great many different thing that can affect just how strict a particular kindergarten class is versus how strict a first grade class is. Still, there are some general ideas about first graders and kindergarteners that may help to understand whether, on the average, first grade is stricter than kindergarten.

First grade does tend to have more of an academic emphasis than kindergarten does. Kindergarten tends to have many more activities that are based on doing “fun” things. Because there is less focus on having a good time and more focus on learning, first grade can seem to be somewhat stricter than kindergarten. However, the fact of the matter is that this change is typically gradual. The last weeks of kindergarten will probably be spent in a very similar fashion, in terms of the academic emphasis, as the first few weeks of first grade. In fact, this increasing academic emphasis is something that will gradually occur all the way through grade school.

First graders are expected to be more mature than kindergarteners. First graders are older, and teachers will generally expect more out of them in terms of behavior. Having said that, a good first grade teacher will not be any stricter than a good kindergarten teacher in terms of behavior. This is because, while a first grade teacher will expect more in terms of behavior, she is also likely to get more. She won’t expect more than what the children are able to do, just like a good kindergarten teacher will expect the best that she can from her students. While the actual rules, rewards, and punishments are probably going to be different in first grade than they are in kindergarten, and sometimes markedly different, the actual level of discipline is probably not that different, if different at all.

Finally, it is important to keep in mind that there are different milestones, benchmarks, and metrics used to measure a first grader’s learning environment than there are in kindergarten. First grade is a part of the elementary school, and the same sorts of laws and things that affect the older grades affect them. Kindergarten, on the other hand, is generally not directly a part of those laws, but rather has its own requirements. These differences could, certainly, make first grade somewhat stricter than kindergarten.
