Is First Grade an Important Part Of School Years?
First grade is indeed a very important part of the school years. Not only is first grade the first time that a student will be exposed to certain academic practices, the fact of the matter is that the material that is covered in first grade is, essentially, the building blocks upon which almost all future education has to be built. Without a successful first grade experience, a child may find that they are behind later on in their school years.
First grade is, for many students, the first time that they will be in school all day long. While it is true that some schools do offer full-day kindergarten programs, many schools only have part-time kindergarten programs, whether they would be just for a part of the day each day or whether they would be just for certain days out of a week. In this regard, the important adjustments that are made during first grade probably cannot be underestimated.
First grade is also important socially. By the time that a child is in the first grade, she is ready to really start making friends on her own. While her friends through the preschool years and even in kindergarten were probably more or less picked by her parents, in first grade a student begins to decide for herself who it is that she wants to associate with.
Academically speaking, first grade is very important. In the first grade, students generally learn to read for the first time. So much of learning later on in the school years is based on the ability of the student to read. The fact of the matter is that if a student doesn’t start to read in the first grade, he is almost guaranteed to be behind later on in his school years. This same idea applies to math, for example. In terms of mathematics, the first grade is an important part of school years because in the first grade students are more thoroughly introduced to basic mathematical concepts, such as addition, subtraction, and even multiplication.
While it is hard to say that first grade is the most important of the school years, it definitely is significant.
