Is America The Largest Homeschooling Country?

Although America is larger in land mass than many of the other countries involved in homeschooling, the percentage of children homeschooled in America is higher than in other nations. And, that percentage continues to rise every year. Most research shows that in America approximately 2.5% of the student population is homeschooled. Other countries have much lower percentages, but percentages that are growing each and every year.

There are many reasons why families in America choose to homeschool and religion ranks up there with the number one reason to homeschool. According to one study approximately 30% of homeschooling parents responded that religion played a large role in their decision to homeschool. Another 30% responded that the environment for learning in public or private schools was not adequate and that homeschooling would be a better option for their children.

Some other reasons to homeschool in America include the social environment found in public and private schools. Many families are concerned about the ideas their children are exposed to in these traditional schools. Not to mention other students who may be bad role models, bullies, or worse. Safety is also an important concern among homeschooling parents. The rash of school violence across America has only influenced more families to choose homeschooling.

Mental illnesses, disabilities, and alternative learning styles are yet other reasons why homeschooling is chosen by many American families. Children falling into these categories typically learn better in a homeschool environment than they do in a traditional school.

Additionally, children who have jobs or busy hobbies like dancing and acting benefit from homeschooling because it can be worked around their schedule. Military families, missionaries, and other families who travel frequently also find homeschooling to be a great alternative for their family.

Although America has a lot of children being homeschooled and more each and every year other countries around the world are also growing in percentage of homeschooled children. This movement has only just started and over the next decade large growth among homeschoolers is expected to take place.
