If I Want To Get Pregnant, When Should I Stop Taking The Pill?

Taking the birth control Pill is greater than 99% successful at preventing pregnancy. It is advised that even if you miss one pill during the month, you should use an alternate method of contraception for the rest of that month, just in case. So it should be obvious that you can become pregnant as soon as you stop taking the Pill, not that that’s how it happens as a matter of course.

For some women, getting pregnant is an achievement that takes six months, even a year, regardless of the methods of birth control that had been used. They may regret having ever taken the Pill but in reality, it may not have been the culprit behind her inability to fall pregnant immediately.

It’s important to know that you can become pregnant on the very first cycle after you stop taking the Pill. Be sure to finish taking the tray of pills you are using to avoid mid-cycle bleeding that may occur due to interrupting the normal rhythm of your body. You may experience irregular cycles which may cause you to think that pregnancy may be more difficult, but in fact, not being able to keep tabs on your ovulation means that you may not know what point you are up to in your cycle as you normally would.

It’s definitely safe to aim for pregnancy as soon as you stop taking the Pill, but the best reason to wait until your cycles are regular is so that you can determine the baby’s due date more easily.

Fertility being a very personal thing, some women will be fertile immediately and others, not for months. The return of normal menstrual periods is a good indication that your body is ready to try to conceive. In fact, once you do get back into a normal routine with your periods, it’ll be easier to gauge when you are most fertile because you’ll be able to calculate when ovulation is occurring.

Despite common fears, there is no evidence to suggest that becoming pregnant while on the Pill presents any risk to the baby.
