I Can’t Seem To Bond With My Infant - Is There Something Wrong?

Many parents await the birth of their child with excitement, anticipation, and maybe even a little trepidation. However, once born some mothers have a hard time developing that special bond with their infant they dreamed so much about. This causes them to be concerned and alarmed and many women wonder if something is wrong. The answer really depends on the situation.

Women who dont feel a special bond within the first few hours or days may simply be recovering from the birthing experience and trying to accustom themselves to the new life of motherhood. Generally once the family arrives home and the mother begins caring for her infant she will start developing that special bond. However, some women still feel apathetic, angry, or even resentful towards their offspring for several weeks or longer. If you find this is happening to you then you should seek medical help as soon as possible. The reason why is that you may have post partum depression. This is actually very common among post partum women and lots of new moms experience what they call the baby blues.

The reason women get postpartum depression is due to rapid hormone changes, or at least that what doctors and researchers believe. As soon as a woman gives birth her levels of progesterone and estrogen drop significantly. This rapid change may be enough to cause a mood disorder like postpartum depression. The idea is that the dropping in hormone levels causes depression like the hormone changes around a womans period causes a change in personality and reactions as well.

There are lots of symptoms that are associated with postpartum depression. These include frequent crying, feeling guilty, not eating or eating too much, feeling worthless, irritability, restlessness, feeling overwhelmed, feeling sad, wanting to withdraw, headaches, no motivation, as well as others could be signs that you are suffering from the baby blues. Seek professional help because there are treatments available. The faster you start feeling like yourself the better parent, spouse, and person you will be.

So, if you do indeed begin to experience those feelings as if you cant bond with your child and that you are simply overwhelmed and sad all the time then you need to see your physician. It is not your fault and postpartum depression is caused by a disruption of your hormonal balance, which you have no control over. So, dont feel embarrassed. Instead, seek help for your happiness and that of your family since that is most important.
