How To Teach A Toddler Colors

Teaching a toddler colors is much like teaching a toddler anything else. You have to repeat, repeat, and repeat! Eventually, it will click and your toddler will know colors. As soon as she understands what a color is then she will be able to better learn other colors. The key is to start slow and with only one or two colors. Your toddler can’t remember 10 different colors at once, so pick two of your toddler’s favorite colors and then start reinforcing them.

Make Piles

If your child already knows what balls are, then make two piles of balls that are two different colors. One pile of red balls and one pile of blue balls. Then, since your toddler knows what a ball is he will readily understand that “Red” or “Blue” is something that describes the ball. Say, this is a blue ball, this is a red ball etc. Ask him where the blue ball is and if he doesn’t know then show him. Repeat this over and over and quickly your toddler will have red and blue down. Then, show him a blue pencil, a blue cup, a red block, and so on and so forth. Your toddler will start picking up on the colors and then be ready for others.

Books

There are many books that reinforce the colors. Find a fun book that focuses on two or three colors with many photos. For example, the book should have one section for red where everything in that section is read like red truck, red hat, red flower, etc. Then, another section for blue with all the same objects from the red section, but in blue. Doing this the child will realize the only thing that changes is the color because the objects are all the same. This is a fun way to teach vocabulary and colors, too!

Point Out Colors

Another good way to teach colors is to always point out different colors. Show them the colors in their clothes and shoes, trees, animals, blankets, and anything you can imagine. The more you should your toddler colors the easier it will be to teach him because you are constantly reinforcing the colors.

You should find the way your toddler learns best and go with that. Most toddlers are fast learners, but some prefer to play games, search for colors, or read a book. Spend time every day showing your toddler colors and you will see it won’ t take long before your toddler knows his colors!
