How to Save Money on Utilities

There are a variety of ways that you can save money on utilities. Whether it is electricity, natural gas, telephone service, or Cable TV, there are more often than not some relatively painless things that you can do to save some money on your utilities. While the money that you save on utilities may only add up to a few dollars a month in some cases, over time this money will add up.

The first area that you can save money on utilities is in the area of cleaning your clothes. Only run your washing machine will full loads of wash. Unless it is absolutely necessary, don’t use hot water in the laundry. Most of the time, your clothes will come clean with just cold water. Also, you should get a feel for how long it takes your dryer to dry a load of clothes. This way, you can set the dryer for only the time that it will actually need in order to dry your clothes.

In terms of cooking, if you are using a gas range, you should put the heat only on high until your pot starts to boil. After this, turn the flame down for the rest of the time. It takes much less heat to keep it going than it does to get it there in the first place. Also, you need to figure out exactly how long it takes your oven to preheat to a specific temperature, and then make sure not to preheat the oven for too long. Make sure to set a timer for food you are cooking, and get in the habit of seeing the timer as a signal to turn off the oven to help you save money on utilities.

Keeping your appliances serviced and clean will also help save money on utilities. A clean furnace uses much less energy than a dirty one. You can also consider purchasing more energy-efficient appliances, as well as other items such as a water-saving showerhead, in order to save money on utilities.

You can save money on telephone and cable utilities, often, by negotiating with the company. If you would like to reduce the cost of your internet service, for example, call the internet provider and ask if they have an introductory rate that you can be switched to. If they don’t, you can always switch to another company that does. The same holds true, in general, on saving money on telephone utilities, as well.

These few simple steps will put you well on the way to saving money on utilities.
