How To Keep Your Toddler Safe Outside

Keeping your toddler safe is a concern that every parent should have. Toddlers, like other children, don’t always make the best decisions on their own when it comes to safety. As parents, we do what we can to make sure that our children have a safe environment inside our homes. However, keeping your toddler safe outside presents specific challenges.

One of the biggest dangers outside for your toddler can be drowning. Even just two inches of water in a mud puddle can be enough for a toddler to drown in. When your toddler is outside, make sure that you scout the area out for any water hazards, such as swimming pools, buckets, and even puddles. by knowing where these things are, you can make sure your toddler is safe.

Another important thing to consider to keep your toddler safe outside is traffic. Even if you don’t live or play in a big city, you should teach your toddler carefully the dangers of the road. Make sure that he understands to stay off of the road. If you have a driveway, you might consider making it off limits, as well, so that your anxious toddler doesn’t run into the driveway to greet an oncoming visitor.

You should also check your toddler’s outdoor play area for other hazards. Rakes, broken glass, or other debris can lead to cuts on your toddler’s feet or even other injuries. In addition, if your toddler isn’t that stable of a walker or runner, you should look out for hills or for dips in the ground that can cause them to trip.

Certainly stranger danger is something else to be aware of when your toddler is outside. Make sure that your toddler knows not to talk to strangers unless you say that it is OK. While it is true that most child abductions take place with a friend or family member, making your toddler aware of stranger danger is still important.

Finally, the most important component to keeping your toddler safe outside is a watchful eye. By knowing at all times where she is and what she is doing, you can help to reduce potential risks, and head danger off before it starts.
