How to Decide Whether to Vaccinate Your Child

Are you going to vaccinate your child? There are many things you will want to consider before making this decision. It is very important to consider all aspects of vaccinations before making a decision. Of course, there are a couple of things that will help you make the best decision for your child. Read the following to determine what the best decision is for your new addition.

Reactions

Many children experience reactions and side effects from vaccines. These may be mild to serious and in some situations death may even occur. Because of this it is very important to review each of the parents’ vaccine history and note any reactions that might have occurred. Additionally, any potential reactions that might have occurred with family members should be noted. If there is any concern that anyone in the family may have experienced a vaccine reaction it is important to discuss this with your pediatrician or postpone vaccinations. It is possible to choose to forego vaccines altogether, too, to ensure your child does not have any adverse reactions.

Risk of Disease

It is important to evaluate the risk of the disease, and the type of disease, before deciding on vaccinations. For example, if you live in an area where your child has a high risk of a particular illness then you may want to have the vaccination. However, if the illness your child may be exposed to is not overly dangerous then it might be preferable for the child to be exposed to the disease rather than getting the vaccination.

Personal Beliefs

If you have personal beliefs or religious beliefs against vaccinating your child then you should not compromise these unless there is an outbreak of a disease and the vaccine would be in your child’s best interest. Today, most children are immunized beginning as early as two months in age. If you believe this is too young to vaccinate your child then you could easily wait until your child is older to begin vaccinations or follow a different vaccination schedule.

When it comes to vaccinating your children you are in charge. You get to decide what is in your child’s best interest and should focus on your child’s health and risk factors. No doctor can make you give your child vaccinations and if you are unsure take your time making your decision. Few babies will be exposed to any of the diseases while they are so young so do the research and make the best decision for you and your child.
