How to Change Your Family’s Spending Habits

The feeling that you can buy anything you want whenever you want is nice, but it’s certainly not a feeling that many people have based on their actual incomes. Sure, credit cards do create a false sense of wealth. You feel that if you have a $10,000 credit limit that you can buy whatever you want. The problem is that many people don’t have the money to pay this debt back when it is due. Or, they simply pay the minimum amount and a $100 pair of shoes ends up costing hundreds of dollars more due to interest. So, what can be done? You have to change your family’s spending habits. This isn’t fun, and it is actually quite a challenge. You can do it, though, if you simply put your mind to it and decide that you will.

Tip #1 Toss the Credit Cards

Carrying credit cards with you gives you a sense of buying power that is not real. Credit is not money you have, it is money you are borrowing and will have to pay back. So, in order to change your spending habits you need to leave the credit cards at home. It makes sense to hide them, not cancel them, and only use them in case of a real emergency like your power being turned off or your car needing repairs to continue running.

Tip #2 Eat at Home

You may think you can eat out as cheap as you can at home, but that is not true. Many people think if they go out and buy ingredients to make spaghetti and spend $15 that it is just as easy to go to McDonalds and spend $15 and not have to shop or do dishes. The difference is, when you spend $15 on ingredients you have enough food leftover for lunch the next day. Packing lunches for the entire family can save at least $15 on lunch the next day. When you put it into perspective, you can eat for at least half the cost at home that you can when eating out.

Tip #3 Make a Budget

Finally, to truly change your family’s spending habits you must make a budget. Write down all the bills, when they are due, and any other financial obligations you might have. Doing this will help you see how much money is coming in, how much money is going out, and where you can make real changes in your financial lifestyle.
