How To Accept Potty-Training Can Be A Long & Difficult Process

Potty training is a frustrating process for many children and their parents. The reason why is that learning to use the potty is not something that happens over night, accidents occur, there are power struggles, and it is just a difficult time. However, you must learn to accept that potty training will take a long time and that it might be difficult as well. If you can do this before you begin potty training then you will make it through the process much saner than if you anticipate it to be a one or two day job! The following tips may help you to make it through the potty training process in one piece!

Plan on It Taking a While
If you go ahead and set yourself up for a potty training marathon then you will be able to endure the many setbacks and accidents that occur along the way. That is not to say it wont be challenging, but at least it will be easier to deal with. Also, if you plan on several months or even years of potty training you may just be pleasantly surprised when your child is potty trained sooner!

Let Your Child Take the Lead

Many parents are at fault for drawing out the potty training process because they pressure their children to use the potty before they are truly ready. This can cause some major power struggles and unhappy parents and toddlers. But, if you step back and be patient and simply allow your child to let you know when he/she is ready to use the potty then you will cut down the potty training process and experience less drama and accidents along the way. Its not easy to give your child control over when he decides to use the potty, but give it a shot and you might be surprised at how well it works.

Encourage Your Child Every Step of the Way
During potty training there are going to be accidents and it is going to be hard to be supportive at all times. But, you are the parent and that is your job so make sure you always support your child during the potty training process. Praise your child when he/she goes potty and show them how proud you are. When an accident occurs simply deal with it in a cool and calm manner. Explain to your child that he/she needs to pee or poop in the potty, help clean them up, and leave it at that. Embarrassing or punishing your child for accidents will likely make the potty training process more difficult and challenging.
