How Should We Start The Process of Finding a Babysitter?

Finding a babysitter for your children can be a difficult and time-consuming process. Many parents aren’t sure where to begin. Fortunately, there are some fairly simple things that you can do to get the process going.

The first thing that you need to do is figure out when exactly you need a babysitter. Do you need an occasional babysitter to be able to go out from time to time? Do you need a babysitter for a regular, recurring meeting or appointment? Do you need a babysitter to watch your children while you are at work? Make a list of the days, dates, and times that you will need a babysitter.

Along with this, you will need to decide how much you are able to pay a babysitter. In most places, if your babysitter will be working for you more than 20 hours every week, you will need to familiarize yourself with employment laws, such as minimum wage, that may apply where you live. You will also need to factor in taxes that you will need to pay for your employee.

Next, you need to decide what you will expect from a babysitter. Do you just need someone to supervise the children? Or do you need someone who can play with the children, or help them with homework or other educational activities? Do you need a babysitter who can perform other household tasks? Make a list of the expectations you have for a babysitter. In addition, you will need to outline emergency procedures and contact lists to give you your babysitter.

Now, you are ready to begin the process of actually finding a babysitter. Many people choose to use friends and family to baby-sit. However, if you don’t have friends or family that are able or willing to baby-sit, there are other ways to find a babysitter. You can ask friends and family for recommendations. You can check with other parents to see if they have babysitters that they use. Sometimes babysitters will post advertisements on a local grocery store bulletin board. Your church or other religious organization may have a list of babysitters that you can contact. Some cities have a babysitter referral service that you may be able to use.

Once you’ve found some candidates, you will need to decide what your screening process will be. You will need to make a list of interview questions, and interview some potential babysitters. Depending on the type of babysitting they will be doing, you might wish to perform a driving record check or a background check.

Remember that the process of finding a babysitter is not always easy. It will be a learning process, but in the long run your children will be better off if you have devoted the time and energy that are necessary.
