The cost of an adoption varies based on a variety of factors. The type of agency you use, for example, plays a big part in the costs. In addition, costs can vary between different adoption agencies. Geography is another important factor, as adoption costs can vary from state to state.

Much of the cost of an adoption using a public agency can vary greatly from one state or locality to the next. In many states, for example, public agencies only will place children for adoption who have special needs. In these instances, most of the time, the cost is subsidized by the state or federal government, and the fees often have a specific limit. Adoption through a public agency will cost typically anywhere from $0 to $2,500.

Using a private adoption agency is, almost always, more expensive. Private agencies may charge anywhere from $5,000 to $35,000, depending on where they are located. Many adoption agencies may have a sliding scale for fees that are based on the income of the adoptive family.

Adopting independently, without an agency of some sort, can cost between $10,000 and $40,000, and is not legal in many states. In addition, an independent adoption runs certain risks. In some case, the adoptive parents may pay quite a bit in both legal and medical fees, only to have the birth parents change their minds.

If you have already found a potential birth mother on your own and then go to a private adoption agency or to an attorney, you may find that the fees that they charge will be greatly reduced.

It is also important, when talking to an agency or an attorney about adoption fees, to find out exactly what services it is that they are providing. There are any number of fees associated with adoption, including lawyer fees, court costs, travel costs, the fee for a home study, medical and/or living expenses for the birth mother, adoption agency fee, and a variety of other costs as well.

All said, the average adoption from a private agency in the United States should run around $10,000, all expenses accounted for. Obviously, this could be much higher or lower depending on your location and circumstances.
