How Is Second Grade Different From First Grade?
Second grade is, in many ways, not all that different from first grade. Still, there are some areas in which second grade is very different from first grade. Understanding a little bit about what exactly it is that students learn in first grade and second grade, and understanding a little bit about the sorts of development that is taking place in first grade and second grade can help to give you an idea about how first and second grade differ, and about how they are sometimes very similar.
Second grade is different from first grade in that second grade students are expected to be readers right off the bat. While this doesn’t mean that every student who starts the second grade will be able to read complex materials, the fact of the matter is that second grade tends to rely a lot more on the student’s ability to read than first grade does. First grade teaches the first grade child to learn how to read, but second grade teaches the second grade child how to put their reading to practical academic use.
Discipline is probably similar in second grade to discipline in first grade. However, students in second grade may be able to understand more complex rules, and may be more geared towards a different sort of system of rewards and punishments. In this way, it is possible that second grade would be different from first grade.
Second grade is especially different from first grade in the content that is taught to students. While second grade will review first grade concepts, and while second grade will build on first grade concepts, the fact remains that the material that is taught in the second grade is going to be different not only in its type, but in its difficulty.
The biggest differences, however, between second grade and first grade, are really going to depend on differences between the first grade teacher and the second grade teacher. Teacher personality, teaching style and philosophy, as well as the teacher’s individual educations will all make many differences from second grade to first grade.
