How Is Discipline Handled in Second Grade?
Discipline is handled in second grade in much the same way that discipline was handled in the first grade. The differences between the two are, generally, relatively small. In fact, the way that discipline is handled in second grade is much more like the way that discipline is handled in first grade than first grade is like preschool or even kindergarten.
Prior to first and second grade, discipline for younger children very often is handled in more of an indirect manner. If a child that is engaging in an inappropriate activity, for example, the teacher might gently redirect the child towards engaging in an activity that is appropriate. In contrast to this, the first grade child who is engaging in an inappropriate activity is likely to be scolded, or punished in some form or another. This discipline may take the form of both rewards and sanctions; for example, a child may start the day with three behavior cards. Each time a child misbehaves, the teacher will take away a card. At the same time, when a child does something that is especially good, the teacher may perhaps put a marble in a reward jar. When the reward jar is full, the class may get a big reward, such as class outing. The sort of reward will probably be different, at least somewhat, for a second grade classroom than it would be for a first grade classroom.
In the first and second grades, teachers are also able to handle discipline in a more complex fashion. Because children are now learning to read and to write, a teacher can use charts and such in the classroom that reflect the childrens’ behavior. First grade children are also more able than younger children to follow directions with multiple steps, which is going to open up all sorts of possibilities in every area, not just discipline.
In addition, discipline in a second grade classroom will probably be different than the way it is handled in first grade in that, in second grade, students often take a more active role in making the rules. Very often the teacher will guide the students at the beginning of the year in an exercise where they devise the rules that will govern their second grade classroom.
To find out how your child’s second grade teacher intends to handle discipline, you should check with the teacher. Each teacher is likely to handle discipline at least a little different than each other teacher.
