How Is Discipline Handled In School?

All schools are different which means the way discipline is handled in each school differs as well. However, most school systems try to ensure that discipline is fair yet strict enough to make sure that students dont want to break the rules. Nevertheless, rules are broken and discipline is doled out. The following overview is typical of how many teachers in the school system handle discipline.

Warning
Most of the time when a student gets out of line he is issued a warning. The warning serves to let the student know that if he does not calm down and get back to work that punishment will be forthcoming. Most of the time a warning issued by the teacher is enough for the student to get back to work and behave. However, some students dont respond well to warnings and continue acting out and misbehaving. Some teachers will give an additional warning while others will simply dole out punishment.

Additional Work
One common type of punishment is to give the student additional work. No student likes additional homework and many times this type of punishment works well to discipline the students and to keep them behaving. Yet there are some students who dont respond well to a teachers attempts at discipline and need something a bit stronger. For these students the only option is the principals office.

Principals Office
A student rarely is sent to the principals office unless he has disobeyed to the point that the teacher feels she no longer has control. Once the student arrives at the principals office he can rest assured he will receive some type of punishment and his parents will be notified. Typical punishments from principals include in school suspension, suspension from school for several days, picking up trash, cleaning, and more. For extreme behaviors expulsion is a disciplinary action although it does not occur that frequently.

If you are truly interested in discipline in schools then you should talk to your childs school and see how discipline is handled there. You will want to talk to all of your childrens teachers as well as the principal and anyone else with the authority to discipline your child. Ask a lot of questions; discuss possible scenarios to find out how discipline is really handled. When you have a good idea of how discipline is handled at your childs school then you will be able to determine if your child should remain at that school or not.
