How Can I Start The Bonding Process With My Infant?

You have been waiting for your babys birth with anticipation for nine months, but once the day arrives you wonder how to bond with your infant. Many new parents report they dont feel an overwhelming love or emotion for their new infant although they expected to. Relax, this is normal. However, there are ways to help you start bonding with your infant and begin that parent child relationship that will last forever.

Feed and Care for Baby
Bonding with your infant is really easy if you are the primary caretakers. You will want to feed, change, dress, and care for your baby. Doing this will help you create an instant bond that is unbreakable. Soon you will be delighting in your babys every movement. You will be overwhelmed with his face, the way he moves his hands, the way he gazes at you, and even his smell. Simply caring for your baby for the first few hours or days will help you create that special bond.

Dads should be included in baby activities so they also feel connected and create that special bond. Too often mothers spend all their time with the newborn and the father feels left out. However, if the father helps with feeding, burping, diapering, and more he will also develop those special feelings and that amazing bond. Dont just give dad the baby when he is crying; instead allow him to experience those special moments with baby as well.

What if I Dont Feel That Special Bond?
Some women find that even after several weeks of caring for their newborn they just dont feel anything special towards them. In many cases this does not reflect a womans capacity to love her child or her ability to be a good mom. Most of the time it is a direct result of the mother having post partum depression or the baby blues. If you feel this way then contact your doctor. There are treatments out there to help you and you will start feeling better soon and become a better parent because of it. Dont feel guilty, many moms suffer from post partum depression; just make sure you get treatment.
